Biography

My main research interests include metazoan parasites of freshwater fish including ecology, distribution, morphology, taxonomy and biology. I'm also involved in the testing of the Health Assessment Index on freshwater fish and the development of a Parasite Index – in co-operation with Prof. A. Jooste (UL) and Prof. A. Avenant-Oldewage (UJ). The work on metazoan parasites of the southern African fish fauna is in co-operation with the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Limpopo Province and Mpumalanga. I am specifically involved in mormyrid fish parasitological research with Prof. P.A.S. Olivier, Department of Biodiversity, UL; Prof. S.N. Mashego, North-West University; Prof L.F. Khalil, retired, United Kingdom. Other current research projects include (i) helminth parasites of game species (Tragelaphus strepsiceros and Aepyceros melampus) - in co-operation with Prof J. Boomker (Onderstepoort, University of Pretoria); (ii) Browse quality in the mopani veld (specifically involved in movement patterns, browse quality and selection of kudu and possible influence of tannins on the internal parasite composition of kudu) – in co-operation with Prof. D.C.J. Wessels (Manager: VLIR Programme, UL); Prof J. Boomker (Onderstepoort, University of Pretoria); (iii) the influence of different pollution levels on the occurrence and composition of fish parasites and the health of fish in freshwater ecosystems; (iv) monogeneans from freshwater fish - in co-operation with Prof A Avenant-Oldewage (UJ) and Dr K Christison (Marine and Coastal Management).
